Remote Training Mistakes and How to Avoid them - Blog Post

Remote training can be described as training that uses methods such as webinars, eLearning platforms and face to face live online training. We are all aware of the benefits of training and why we should provide our staff with training and development programmes and moving this training online is an easy process, but like everything, there are pitfalls that a business can fall into.

Here at SeamsCloud, we have put together some of the common mistakes that can sometimes occur with remote training and how to best avoid them.

  1. Not assessing employees. Just with everything in life, it is important to evaluate, assess and adapt to progress and improve. When employing a new hire, many businesses use an assessment to see if they can handle the job. When carrying out remote training, it is important to assess employees at regular intervals and to see if they are taking on board procedures and policies and know what to do in certain situations and how to handle situations the way that you want them to. Any good LMS provider will assist you in developing an assessment element into your training programme.
  • Lack of Communication. When employees are training, especially remotely, questions may arise, and some areas may need clarification. Everybody learns differently and some things may not be as clear for some people as others. Any LMS provider will help you with developing a clear and customised training programme, but some clarification may still be needed. For this reason, communication avenues need to be open and easy. The key is that employees undergoing remote training, should be able to ask you a question and get a response as easy as they would if they were in the office.
  • Not Checking in. As staff are taking part in remote training, it is vital that leaders check in with staff regularly, not only does this allow employees to clarify various points, but it also opens up the opportunity for communication. It is important to not overstep the mark and allow employees the chance to learn independently but show them that the company is there to support them.
  •  Not creating a schedule. Although remote employees are very much in charge of their own time and how they manage it, it is best practice to create a series of deadlines or landmarks for what should be completed and by when. This will provide a structure and also show remote employees what is expected of them.
  • Training Leaders. An area which also needs to be explored is the point of contact that is leading the training is equipped with the skills and tools to lead a remote training programme.
